Tesla Record Update: Model S and Model X Batteries

Ilon Musk announced that Tesla cars will receive a new option - a 100 kW⋅h battery for the Model S and Model X, supporting the newly introduced driving mode, officially called the "Ludicrous Mode".

More than a year ago, the Tesla Model S received the so-called “Insane Mode”, allowing you to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds. About a month ago, “Ludicrous Mode” was introduced, which reduced the acceleration time to 2.8 seconds.

The possibility of battery upgrade announced today reduces the acceleration time of the Model S in the new mode to 2.5 seconds. This figure is a record - there are no cars in the mass market that exceed it, and only two cars in the world bypass it (Porsche 918 Spyder and LaFerrari).

In addition to the outstanding acceleration time, the new battery increases the range on one charge to 507 km for the Model S. This result is also a record for electric cars. Model X with a new battery will be able to drive 465 km. Previously, the maximum mileage for these models was 435 km and 403 km, respectively.

Possible mileage on a single charge is one of the main restrictions for electric cars, and many manufacturers seek to raise the bar. At the end of last year, Porsche promised to present an electric car capable of driving 500 km by 2019. A week ago, Volkswagen announced the presentation of a car with a mileage of up to 600 km in October. Today, however, Tesla holds the lead.

The cost of the upgrade for current owners of cars will be $ 20,000, which exceeds the price difference between the old and new modifications on the site. Ilon Mask explained this by the need to dispose of old batteries when replacing them.
