Computer in the car, year 2016

Automotive electronics is an important and actively developing component of the digital world. Intel has long brought it to the list of priority areas of its activities; At one time, 4 years ago, I made a post describing the situation in the field of autocomputers and the company's vision of its role in the general movement. Now there is a reason to return to the topic: in the fall, Toyota will release a new version of the Prius Prime hybrid car with an onboard computer developed by Intel. What is a computer in auto release 2016?

As already mentioned, in recent years, Intel has actively developed the direction, which itself called IVI - In-Vehicle Infotainment. During the reporting period, leading car brands such as Mercedes, Kia, BMW, Hyundai, Infiniti and Lexus became partners of Intel. Intel's IVI solution development center has become a specialized division of the Automotive Innovation & Product Development Center, located in Karlsruhe, Germany. The interest of Japanese automakers to IVI is easily explained, because the Japanese love everything innovative and technological. Just as logical is Toyota’s desire to equip the latest generation of the new Prius with its latest generation computer system - the first and most successful hybrid in history, already sold in quantities of more than 6 million. It is worth looking at KDPV and you will understand: the new version will also definitely be a success.

In 2014, Intel introduced the Kendrick Peak automotive hardware and software platform. In its most current form, it looks like this:

Thanks to the use of Intel products (and Altera, I remind you, it is also a part of it), we managed to achieve maximum versatility and performance, while remaining within the acceptable cost. However, when you first meet the Toyota Prius Prime, you will most likely get the maximum sensation from a giant 11.6-inch touchscreen display with HD resolution, which occupies a key place on the car's dashboard.

Being a full-fledged unit of the “Internet of things”, the new Prius will always be online, transferring telemetry data to a special data center that will be built by Toyota. Data is supposed to be a lot - up to 40 GB per minute. Here, it seems, we need 5G-Internet and an unlimited tariff ... The information received from the cars, including, will be used when designing unmanned vehicles, the mass appearance of which is a matter of the near future. Intel is also working at full speed in this direction. Just a couple of months ago, the company entered into an agreement on joint development with BMW and Israeli manufacturer of computer vision systems Mobileye. Mass production of self-managed machines, predicted by Intel, will begin in 2021.
