Mobileye will stop Tesla autopilot development

According to the publisher MarketWatch , the Israeli company Mobileye, which is developing the EyeQ3 technology used by the Tesla autopilot, announced its intention to stop cooperating with Tesla Motors.


This happened immediately after the announcement of the financial results of the quarter (Mobileye shares fell by 19% after the well-known case of a Tesla fatal car accident, followed by a slow recovery). At the same time, Mobileye promises to continue to support EyeQ3 and the release of important updates, but not its further development. Instead, the company will throw all its strength on the recently announced joint project with Intel and BMW to create a fully autonomous vehicle by 2021.

The publication ArsTechnica cites the statement of the founder and technical director of Mobileye Amnon Shashua: “Moving towards more perfect autonomy is a paradigm shift in terms of both complexity and the need to ensure an extremely high level of security. Much at stake is the reputation of Mobileye and the industry as a whole. Mobileye believes that achieving this goal requires partnerships that go beyond the simple supply of OEM components. ”

Ilon Musk said that the termination of the partnership was expected and would not affect Tesla's development plans for fully autonomous autopilots for their cars.
