Spector: a miniature scanner to identify fonts and accurately copy color

Graphic design is not the easiest profession. Designers to create even a small image need to solve many different issues, including the selection of colors. Sometimes an interesting font comes across to the designer, which he can not immediately identify - there are more than one thousand of them, of fonts. Favorite color, in general, you can take a picture. But the color rendition when printing photos will be different from reality. Yes, and on the screen such a photo will no longer be what you saw in reality.

To solve these two problems - accurate copying of color and identification of the font, Fiona O'Leary created a hand scanner. She called her device Spector. Immediately it should be said that this is only a prototype, albeit a fully working prototype. All data device then passes to Adobe InDesign.

Buy the device is not yet possible, but after a while the fundraising campaign on Kickstarter will be posted. In the meantime, this is an interesting idea that has received a single implementation. O'Leary calls his device a “physical pipette” (meaning the corresponding virtual tool from a graphic editor, of course).

In order to get started, you must place Spector on a document or any object, and release the button located at the top of the device. The camera takes a picture of the sample, and a special algorithm analyzes the image and helps identify the font or color (CMYK / RGB values are given). If there is a computer nearby, data can be transferred immediately to Adobe InDesign. Is there a computer nearby? No problem. Spector can save information about 20 samples. Data without problems can be transferred to the PC later.

The idea of creating such a device came O'Leary after a number of problems with the color rendition of the printout. This is a standard problem. In addition, recognizing any fonts can also be a problem. Therefore, Spector identifies them. However, so far in the device database only 7 fonts (remember, this is a prototype), including Apercu, Bureau Grot, Canela and Founders Grotesk. Now the developer plans to add a large base. The tool works with any font size up to 48. The outline also does not matter. The system analyzes the free space between the lines of letters and numbers.

If such a device goes into “circulation”, of course, after improvement, many designers will be able to breathe a sigh of relief.

Invitation to test dadzhetov

The djadget invites authors interested in testing our devices ( we don’t have Spector ) and write an objective review for cooperation. The device after the publication of the review remains with you. Read more about the offer here .
