Worthy end: the developers destroyed the Planetside game world by meteorite bombardment
The game servers have been disabled by arranging an apocalypse before this
In 2003, the IMO game Planetside was introduced. At that time it was an interesting multiplayer project, successfully competing with other MMO games. Over time, MMO toys became more, and Planetside was increasingly difficult to compete with other game projects. The players gradually left, and a decade later, the developers decided to stop the active development of the game world. The old team threw all the forces on the development of the second part of the toy, Planetside 2. ')
In 2014, the first version switched to the free-to-play model, but the funds received from the players were still not enough. In fact, revenues did not even cover the cost of maintaining servers. For the time being, the Planetside servers were not disconnected, and many users continued to explore the game world, which was not so small. But everything comes to an end, this MMO is no exception. Daybreak Games studio announced the closure of the game servers, noting that the decision to complete the project was made for the further development of the company's business and due to a number of technical limitations of the toy itself. In July of this year, the servers decided to disable, despite the fact that in April and May, the developers added several new elements in the game world. The project team decided not just to turn off everything at once, but to arrange a spectacular apocalypse. What was done: before shutting down the servers, the virtual world was destroyed with the help of meteorite bombardment.
World Planetside consisted of dozens of continents, each of which is involved in the ongoing war. The game used heavy equipment and aircraft, the most fantastic weapons and even orbital bombardment. Players could develop their character as an infantryman or a sniper, a hacker or a medic, a pilot or a driver - only about 30 specialties.
Planetside is one of many good game projects that have been turned off due to their unprofitability. Sometimes game fans launch their own servers, as is the case with the original WoW version and the Nostalrius server. But the developers do not welcome such manifestations of nostalgia. The same WoW server was shut down at the request of Blizzard. According to the company, the activities of the project teams clearly violate the copyright of the company. The Nostalrius team had previously intended to lay out the source code and the player base to the network in order to give WoW fans the opportunity to continue working on the project. Now this decision was canceled .
As for Planetside, so far there are no third-party servers with this toy on the network.
