Summer 2016 may be the last summer in which we will live with roaming. Now I will tell you why. There are many factors that indicate that roaming is about the past. Let's try to understand them.
Legislative Initiatives
Not so long ago, the EU adopted a number of legislative initiatives to abolish roaming in EU countries. Obviously, these initiatives will meet resistance from the market - mobile operators, who are forced to bear significant costs from an organizational and technological point of view. Today it is obvious that legislative initiatives will not give the opportunity to cancel roaming completely - for example, the cancellation will apply only to subscribers who spend 90% of their time on their home network. It is unlikely that such restrictions somehow help to save. ')
ESIM development
eSIM is a SIM card (subscriber ID) that is embedded in a wearable electronics in the form of a chip. The main purpose of such a SIM preset in any wearable device. It's obvious that
with the growth of the IoT market, the demand for such cards will grow.
global vendors will want to optimize the cost of connecting such devices to a mobile network.
Examples of implementation today - Samsung has released the first device with support for new technology eSIM - smart watch Gear S2 Classic 3G. Apple announced a reprogrammable SIM with iPad Air 2 (classic version).
It is important that the first steps towards the independence of the connections of IoT devices have already been taken and the operators themselves have taken these steps.
Technological background
Operators began with the adoption of a standard or specification of Remote SIM provisoning (transmitting the SIM over the air), which allows you to connect to different mobile operators at any time via an eSIM or “virtual SIM” installed in a wearable device.
The adoption of the specification began in 2014, and the specification was initiated by the GSM Association ( GSMA ), which brings together about 800 operators and 250 companies of the mobile ecosystem. The beginning of the creation of the specification was announced in the summer of 2014. In February 2016 the creation of the specification is completed .
Initially, the specification was planned to be created only for m2m devices, but in December 2015, the specification began to be extended to user wearable devices. To date, the standard has already been implemented for all SIM types. According to open sources, the first standard was implemented by ComfortWay .
What will happen with roaming
The world is inert and the classical model of inter-operator exchange will still live for some time, and the price in roaming will decrease to reasonable limits. But against the background of the described trends and the emerging devices and solutions, the “earlier majority” of users of technological innovations can already experience the absence of roaming this summer.
