On the 20th anniversary of Quake, a new episode has been released for this game.
Are old games experiencing a rebirth?
This year, fans of classic games received several gifts at once in the form of new levels for games that are already a couple of decades old. One of these games is the original Quake, which marked exactly 20 years ago. As a gift to the fans of this game, the MachineGame team (the studio that developed Wolfenstein: The New Order and the addition of The Old Blood) released a new episode for Quake. Like any gift, this episode is completely free. ')
According to gamers who have already familiarized themselves with the novelty, the episode is rather complicated and long. For a couple of hours, a beginner can’t go through anything. Here, as in the original, a lot of hidden rooms and mysteries. True, some puzzles can not be called difficult - but this is probably a calculation for a new generation of gamers who are not familiar with the games of previous years. After all, most of today's toys can not be called too complicated, with the exception of some items.
You can download the episode from the official website of the publisher Bethesda by clicking on the link in the tweet above.
It is also impossible to call the new episode a masterpiece, but it is interesting to play it, there are no problems with it. Here it is also worth remembering that the game requires the installation of the original Quake. In order to add a new development, you should download the archive with the files, and add to the new folder “DOPA” in the folder with the original game. If the content provider is Steam, then the path should be as follows: [Steam folder] \ steamapps \ common \ Quake. After installation, select the file "dopa.bat" and run it.
The new episode is compatible with the GOG-version of the game. GOG is a digital distribution service for computer games and movies without DRM. In order for games to work properly on new versions of operating systems and with new hardware, some games are updated with the service and are provided with open for use emulation and compatibility programs, such as ScummVM and DOSBox.
In January of this year, well-known to many gamers, John Romero released a new level to the original Doom. The level is called E1M8B.
The original Quake shooter was released on June 22, 1996 (shareware version). Even before the official release of the release, the developers released a test demo of the toy, called QTest. Here only multiplayer was implemented, but despite this, the toy became popular almost immediately. After several days, dozens of servers for an online game appeared in the global network (do not forget that 1996 was the year). The game can be safely called innovative for its time, because the developers have implemented textured polygonal models, and not sprites, as in many other games. As a result, the game was a three-dimensional world.
Modern eSports owes its appearance to Quake. This game had a large community almost immediately after the release, after some time the official major championships began to be held.
Quake consists of 28 levels, divided into 4 different episodes. Plus 4 more hidden sublevels.
