First about the good.
The competition itself - selected 50 companies, among them there were really many interesting ones. A very good idea with Demopiti, but you need to look for a slightly different format. In this form, it does not work. Many people gathered, many interesting people. Many investors (in absolute terms). Still, it was felt that the event is key in the industry. 2000 people. According to my estimates, 70-80% come from other states and countries.
The content was very good, interesting panels, interesting and ruthless discussion of startups by judges. You could touch the living Calacanis and Arrington Three days flew by - unnoticed. Very pleased with the online broadcast of the whole action!
So, as I participate in organizing another event in Silicon Valley - REDOD, then my criticism will be a little bit from the inside, do not think that I am grumbling.
1. The place is terrible. The Civic Center is by no means in the best area of San Francisco.
2. The venue has some drawbacks. Two toilets for 2000 people - a little.
3. I wrote about the Internet, the first day it simply did not exist. The second day was, but not the fastest, on the third day everything was fine.
4. Selection of projects. The logic is just incomprehensible! In the TC50 were such weak projects, which was just a shame for them. I understand that taking away from 500 projects is a lot of time to spend, but not so much
5. Visy was a lot. About 50 people I counted. But for 1500 entrepreneurs. They did not spend more than a minute on the project. Many of them did not wear badges and went incognito (DFJ, Sequoia), gave business cards only if they liked the project, if they didn’t know the face and would have missed it. And as a result, then on Demopit only every 10th person who approached the table was related to investors. I'm not sure that the money for this was a reasonable investment (I am very pleased that two people could spend this money, which means they could sit in the hall for their day, and listen to the other two - as I wrote, the content was strong ). At our REDD, the ratio is usually 40-50 to 180-200 - this gives much greater chances to meet with the investor.
6. The selection system on Demopit. Each participant was given tokens that were thrown into companies. Those who collected the most - that and sneakers (I remind you that in the TS50, 49 were actually selected, and one company that collected the most tokens on Demopite). On the second day, two girls, of very dubious appearance in short red dresses, collected 120 tokens for one of the companies. I don’t know what happened, but it didn’t have anything to do with a fair assessment.
7. Food! On the head is not dressed. I will not even write.
That wrote it and thought. The main thing is not the main question. Is it all worth 3k dollars? Thought and answered - WORTH! Next year I will go again. Highly recommend.
Two comments.
1. Who watched the broadcast drew attention - it is all about business. This is the main and only criterion. Is it a good technology, a good product? And how much money it will bring. And no sentiment. Our startups need to review their records every day. Learn and remember.
2. If Ukraine was represented by 4 companies, then there was not a single one from Russia. For me, this is a paradox.
