Presents the current prototype KiloCore chip with 1000 independent processors on a single chip.

On June 16, 2016, at the 2016 Symposium on VLSI Technology and Circuits , held recently in Honolulu, a group of specialists from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of California at Davis presented the current prototype of the KiloCore chip, on which it fit thousand independent programmable processors. The total number of transistors on a chip was 621 million units, and the maximum developed speed was close to a record high of 1.78 trillion operations per second.

“In addition to the chip we have created, this is the first chip in the world with a thousand processors, it is also the processor with the highest clock frequency ever built in our institution,” explains Bevan Baas, a professor of electrical engineering and computer technology and the head of the group of specialists who developed the KiloCore microprocessor architecture. It should be clarified here that the KiloCore chip is not the only chip in the world with a large number of cores. At the same time, according to the analytical report provided by Baas, the maximum number of processor cores - competitors has not yet reached 300. The absolute majority of such "hyper-core" processors were created exclusively for research purposes and only a few are in the stage of transition to a commercial level.

The prototype of the KiloCore chip was manufactured at IBM production facilities using 32-nm CMOS technology. Each of its core, regardless of the rest, is able to solve their computational problems. This approach is much more flexible than the Single-Instruction, Multiple Data (Single-Instruction-Multiple-Data) approach implemented in multi-core graphics processors (GPUs). The idea embodied in the KiloCore processor architecture is to automatically split the program into separate small subroutines that are executed independently of each other on different cores. This makes it possible to immediately improve two fundamentally important indicators: to achieve a cardinal increase in the performance of the system as a whole and to achieve a cardinal improvement in energy efficiency, since if the computing power of an individual processor is not in demand at the current time, it stops its work.

The clock frequency of each core is 1.78 GHz, while the cores have the ability to transfer data to each other directly, rather than using shared memory areas, which becomes a bottleneck of most multicore computing systems.

As its creators note, the KiloCore chip today is the most energy efficient multi-core processor. So, for example, developing a performance of 115 billion operations per second, all 1000 processors will dissipate no more than 0.7 watts of energy. For effective work of the chip, experts note, it will be enough to provide the current produced by a single AA battery. The test results allowed to assert that the KiloCore chip executes instructions with an efficiency at least 100 times higher than the performance of the most modern processors, leading the existing flagship line of multi-core microprocessors for laptops and tablet computers.

Under the KiloCore processor, several “heavy” applications have already been developed that require parallel data processing and high performance. These include applications that solve the problem of encoding-decoding information transmitted by radio signals, video processing, encryption, data processing of a scientific nature, data center data stream processing, and other tasks related to parallel processing of large data arrays.



At present, a team of specialists has already completed work on automatic display tools for programming the chip and the compiler, which breaks down the program code into small subroutines in automatic mode, which can be executed by separate KiloCore processor cores.
