Russian company WayRay introduced a holographic car navigation system

The technologies of virtual and augmented reality are rapidly unleashing their potential, providing users with fundamentally new possibilities of contact with the most diverse useful information and the surrounding reality. One of the developments that WayRay engineers worked with for 3.5 years with Russian roots is the versatile Navion AR car navigator, which provides the driver with a new quality of visual contact with the track, both when making new routes and daily routines using familiar roads .

The company WayRay was founded in Russia in 2012, but after a while it settled in the Swiss town of Lausanne, taking advantage of the invitation of the economic development agency of Geneva and Bern (GGBa). Although the company's headquarters is located in Switzerland, the Development Center is still based in Russia. About 70 engineers work in the Russian division of WayRay and the Navion AR navigator, which uses the principles of augmented reality technology, has become the company's main product.

The system includes a laser projector and a transparent film that allows you to create a color holographic image on the windshield, perceived by the driver as an image that is always in front of the car. Thus, the driver is available visual information about the route and distance to objects, depending on the speed of movement in real time. As the representatives of WayRay explained, neither a helmet nor special AR-glasses are required, and the navigator itself will perfectly cope with its tasks in a car of any brand, any manufacturer, since 1990. No special technical changes to the design are required. The operation of the device is supported by its own navigation system using cartography created using OpenStreetMap.

It is important that “... Navion uses optomechanics and special optical elements - correctors - in order to provide high-quality image on different windshields. In addition, we are working on different versions of the film structure with varying degrees of elasticity, ”a company representative shared with journalists.

Navion responds to simple voice commands, which allows you to interact with the car, without switching attention to the elements of the dashboard. You can set the route program, access the desired function or the priority interface of the screen (weather forecast, driving statistics, etc.) at any time by voice. The device, measuring 6.7 x 4.72 x 3.15 inches, is supported by a 4-core 1.3 GHz processor. 3G Internet and Bluetooth channel available.

The Navion AR navigator, using the principles of augmented reality technology, is the company's first start-up, which, according to WayRay founder and CEO, Vitaly Ponomarev, "... Today, the company has spent more than $ 10 million of its own funds and venture capital investments."

WayRay positions its system as the first AR navigator on the planet, fully ready to enter the commercial market. However, it is worth noting that in the concern BMW had already thought about something similar:

In the b2c market in the USA, where the company also has an office, Navion is expected by the end of 2016. The cost of the device, depending on the version, will be $ 300- $ 500. According to WayRay representatives, the product will arrive on the Russian, less “capacious” market a little later. How much later? - Not specified.
