The source code of the demo Elevated 4066 bytes is published

Demogamers Rgba and TBC shared with the public the secrets of their skills. Yesterday they released the open source source code for the famous Elevated demo, which won the PC 4k Intro nomination at the Breakpoint computer art festival in 2009. Seven years have passed, but the work is still impressive. Just watch the video , preferably in 1080p.



It is hard to believe, but this copy of computer art is procedurally generated in real time by an executable file of only 4066 bytes in size . Sound is also synthesized on the fly.

Demo is a genre of computer art, which is a multimedia presentation in order to demonstrate the capabilities and knowledge in the field of programming, computer graphics, 3D-modeling and writing music. Each demo is calculated in real time.

The Demoscene emerged in the early 1980s with the advent of commercial computer games that are protected from illegal copying. Burglary groups, advertising their achievements in removing copy protection, added simple intro to hacked games and programs. The intro was loaded into memory before loading the main program file, displayed a simple message with a couple of simple video effects (usually something like “Cracked by ...” with the effect of the marquee) and loaded the game. Over time, the quality of the intro was perceived as one of the signs of the mastery of the group. With the increasing complexity of protection systems and the emergence of new computer platforms, the quality of intro has also grown. Inside the group appeared specialization in writing code, graphics and music for the intro.

Gradually, the intro emerged as a separate type of computer art, thereby distancing itself from illegal hacking and software distribution.

In more detail about the creation of “Elevated” the authors tell in the presentation , mentioning the methods used to generate the landscape, the alignment of the horizon relative to the camera, the effect of motion blur, the addition of lakes to the landscape.



You can run the demo on your computer. The rgba_tbc_elevated_2016.zip archive contains three options:

elevated_1280_720.exe elevated_1440_900.exe elevated_1920_1080.exe 

Each file has a size of 3.97 KB (4066 bytes), the compression was carried out by the compressor Crinkler. Executable files were recompiled in 2016 for compatibility with Windows 10. They should run on all versions of Windows, but in fact they are not launched everywhere.
