Sales of smartphones in the world
grew by 4%, but the growth did not affect devices on Windows Phone. Microsoft sold 2.3 million smartphones in the first quarter of this year - 73% less than during the same period last year.
If in the 1st quarter of 2009, smartphones on the Windows Mobile operating system from Microsoft occupied 10.2% of the smartphone market, and Android - only 1.6%, now Windows Phone devices account for 0.7%.
And Microsoft wants to sell the phone business. Does this mean that Windows Phone has come to an end?

In 2000, Microsoft introduced a mobile operating system for pocket personal computers, communicators and smartphones - Windows Mobile. In October 2010, she had a successor: Windows Phone. The first smartphone on this system in Russia is the
HTC 7 Mozart , its sales started in September 2011. But even then the gadgets on the mobile Windows system lost to all competitors - in the fourth quarter of 2011, their share was 1.9%.
In the third quarter of 2013, Windows Phone outperformed several competitors and gained a share of 3.6%. RIM had 1.8%, Bada - 0.3%, Symbian - 0.2%. It's hard to compare with iOS and Android - they got 12.1% and 81.9%, respectively. And in Q3 2013, Microsoft
bought the Nokia phone business along with patents.

In the first quarter of 2015, the American company sold 8.6 million Lumia on Windows Phone. This year
only 2.3 million . At the same time, the entire smartphone market on Windows Phone amounted to 2.4 million devices, that is, Microsoft controls it by 95%. The fall in sales could have been caused by a shortage of new Lumia models. Now Microsoft plans to sell its phone business to Chinese Foxconn for $ 350 million.
If Microsoft does not introduce new models of smartphones on Windows Phone, the share will continue to decline. Other vendors will not be able to influence the market, as they account for only 5% of all devices on this OS.
Microsoft will continue to develop Windows 10 Mobile and support some Lumia models, including the Lumia 650, Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, as well as smartphones from the company's partners - Acer, Alcatel, HP, Trinity and VAIO. But we will probably not see the new Lumia anymore. But in 2017, the company may release Surface Phone on Windows 10 Mobile.
The company
abandoned users of some old smartphones to their fate. For example, video messages were removed from Skype under this OS.
