APWorks showed a 35-pound electric motorcycle from a 3D printer

APWorks, a subsidiary of Airbus Group, introduced a fully functional motorcycle printed on a 3D printer. The frame of the Light Rider vehicle is made of the composite material developed by the company Scalmalloy and weighs only 6 kilograms. The weight of the entire motorcycle is 35 kilograms. The company claims that the 6-kilowatt motor of a motorcycle can accelerate it to 80 kilometers per hour in seconds.

APWorks engineers optimized the frame structure of the motorcycle and used a special aluminum alloy to make it strong enough for daily loads and normal driving scenarios, but at the same time reduce weight to a minimum.

APWorks used Scalmalloy material in its work. As the company itself writes about it, it is as light as aluminum and as plastic as titanium. This is one of the newest materials currently developed by the Airbus Group. The alloy consists of aluminum, magnesium and scandium - AlMgSc. Scandium in combination with other metals gives strength with a constant weight, so it is often used in the aerospace industry. It was used in the construction of the Mir station and the International Space Station.

One example of using APWorks material is a partition made by the company together with Autodesk , which separates the passenger compartment from the on-board kitchen of the aircraft. The new version weighs 30 kilograms instead of the old 65 kilograms, that is, more than twice as light. The shape of the partition wall is designed to withstand the necessary loads.

Not only material is important. Optimization of the shape of the frame of an electric motorcycle made it look like a skeleton. The material itself is light enough for the frame to weigh only 6 kilograms. The motorcycle was equipped with a 6-kilowatt engine, which in a few seconds will accelerate it to 80 kilometers per hour. On one charge Light Rider will travel up to 60 kilometers.

To create a frame, APWorks used 3D selective laser printing technology to distribute Scalmalloy powder into layers 60 microns thick. The frame parts are hollow, which makes it possible not only to reduce weight, but also to hide the cables and the screw-in points inside.

APWorks will print and collect 50 Light Rider motorcycles. The company asks for 50 thousand euros for each. To become the happy owner of this miracle of technology, you first have to pay 2,000 euros to the manufacturer’s account. The remaining 48 thousand need to pay extra later.
