A smart bluetooth swab tells you when it's time to change

One perennial female fear is to look down and detect blood. Especially in public. Start-up my.Flow wants to solve this problem once and for all, making the tampon another device from the wearable electronics category: on the smartphone screen, the user will see how full the tampon is and when it will be time to change.

If the interlocutor of the journalist Gizmodo say that such a gadget would be used with pleasure in 13 years, then Dana Wollman with Engadget does not understand to whom this may be useful. Moreover, from the usual at first glance a tampon there is a wire to the device that needs to be fixed on the belt.

The original concept of "smart tampon" included the actual tampon, inside which the necessary sensors and electronics were placed. The device itself had to send data to the smartphone via Bluetooth - right from the inside. But not all women were thrilled with the idea of putting this kind of electronics in themselves.

The gadget consisted of an RFduino, a button battery and a holder for it.

The new version of the device is a regular tampon with an applicator. The only difference is that a wire 15 centimeters long is sticking out of the tampon, with which it transfers information to the main unit. That is, there is also the external part of the device, which must be mounted on a linen or belt.

The external unit is like a doorbell.

Information from the sensors is transmitted via Bluetooth to the smartphone. The app, just as the Mi Band shows the remainder of the battery, shows the swab fullness. Over time, it will begin to predict when menstruation will begin, how long it will last, and on which of the days the bleeding will be strongest.

The main idea is to help women avoid unpleasant surprises in the form of unexpected periods. And also - to help reduce the likelihood of infectious-toxic shock syndrome. The pathogenesis of this dangerous disease is reduced to poisoning of the blood with bacterial toxins, and in the case of tampons it is caused by Staphylococcus aureus. The disease can lead to death in the first hours - the probability of death is 5-15%.

Someone will agree that such a device could be useful for young girls who are just starting to use tampons: “Now I don’t need such a device, but at 13 years old it would be useful.” And my wife said that women themselves know when their periods begin, and when it is time to change the tampon.

The price of the device will be $ 50 for a Bluetooth module and about $ 13 a month for tampons. Usually in the US, women spend 9-10 dollars a month on tampons, Gizmodo leads prices.

The journalist Engadget recalls another smart device for this purpose - the LoonCup menstrual cup. This means of intimate hygiene is a container for collecting secretions and does not absorb them. If you use them according to the instructions - no health risks. As in the case of tampons - you just need to change them in time and wash your hands.

The smart cup also reports to the smartphone when it is full. Moreover, she has an RGB sensor - and the device will understand the color of the discharge when it advises the owner to go to the doctor. And, of course, the application will predict the beginning and duration of menstruation.
