Hyperloop is planning to test the first section today [UPD: testing was successful]
A new type of transportation system is gradually turning from fiction into reality.
Hyperloop Technologies announced its intention to conduct the first tests of its transport system on a test site already on Wednesday, May 11. At the same time, the company decided to change the name to Hyperloop One. The name change is likely due to the company's desire to avoid confusion with another organization, Hyperloop Transport Technologies. ')
Tests will be conducted on a site just 1 kilometer long. It is planned to test the work in the field of the prototype Hyperloop, capable of accelerating to a speed of 540 km / h. If everything goes well, the test section will be extended to 3 kilometers, and the tests will be conducted at full speed (over 1100 km / h). Investors trust the project, and continue to invest - the other day the company received another $ 80 million investment, in addition to the $ 26 million previously received.
Interestingly, Hyperloop Transport Technologies (a competitor of Hyperloop One) announced the receipt of a patent for a special type of magnetic levitation, which will be used in the company's own transport system. Moreover, HTT, according to its management, did not intend to delay attention to itself before testing Hyperloop One. HTT collects funds not only with the help of investments, but also with the help of crowdfunding, it is the main instrument of financing the organization.
In Hyperloop One, a company founded by Ilon Mask, there are specialists from NASA, Boeing, Tesla, SpaceX. A total of 480 people are involved. Earlier on Geektimes it was already reported that the Hyperloop system from Ilona Mask can be free for passengers. Passengers will ride for free, but if they want additional services, comfort, benefits, they will have to pay. In addition, the developers of Hyperloop are reflecting on another possibility - to get money for the fare from passengers only during peak hours. The rest of the time the fare will be free.
At the same time, the company will not lose a lot of money, since it is planned that Hyperloop will only consume green energy from renewable sources.
Let me remind you that Hyperloop uses magnets and powerful fans (they force air residues with the help of special guides to create an air cushion) in order to make aluminum capsules move along the pipeline. Perhaps the project will be implemented only with the use of an air cushion, then the magnets in the system can be abandoned. The pipeline will be covered with solar panels, the system and the batteries that accumulate the energy received by the batteries during the day are included in the system. The developers have added some innovative solutions, but, in general, all of these are already existing technologies. As early as the 1950s, some science-fiction authors described a system of pipelines (or tunnels) with evacuated air along which the capsules on a magnetic cushion are moving with great speed.
But it was fantastic, but now we are talking about a real system, the test of which will be conducted today.
UPD : the test was successful, all according to plan.
The system weighing 600 kilograms could accelerate to 100 km / h in just 1.1 seconds, with the ability to accelerate to 640 km / h. Today, the project team focused only on the propulsion system, and nothing else. There is no tunnel yet, since its creation was not the goal of ongoing tests, respectively, the system experienced air resistance to the full. The acceleration was 2.5G. Here are a few photos from the test site (they themselves were held north of Las Vegas).
