Free graphic editor Krita for the third time on Kickstarter

Today, the Krita project has launched the third campaign on Kickstarter , in which improved work with text and vector objects is announced - a functionality that will appeal primarily to comic artists.

')

Last year's Kickstarter campaign allowed the Krita project team to implement the long-awaited animation creation functionality and improve the speed of large brushes using the Instant Preview mode. In addition, many of the strech targets chosen by the users were implemented. Some of them are already available in the beta version of Krita 3.0. The rest will appear in Krita 3.1.

This year, the developers plan to throw their forces on the unfairly forgotten parts of Kryta: on the tools for working with text and vector objects.

The fact is that Crete inherited a tool for working with text from the Calligra package (aka KOffice). That is, in essence, this is not a graphic editor tool, but a full-fledged word processor with a bibliography, semantic description of the document and tables. Unfortunately, this text processor has very weak typography and font settings. And the quality of its integration into Crete has always suffered.

Now it is time to create a new tool that would satisfy the interests of Crites, and not the word processor: it would support fine-tuning typography, allow you to create artistic text and work with all possible languages and types of writing. Instead of working with tables and columns, the new tool will have to be able to create text balloons (“speech balloons”), which will greatly facilitate the life of the artists who draw comics.

The second goal for the next year, the developers put a simplification of work with vector objects. They have about the same fate as the text: they got from the office suite. Because of this, the internal representation of objects is in the OpenDocument Graphics format, which is great for office documents, but not very good for artistic images. The team has already begun work on adding support for SVG, and now it remains only to complete what has been started. After the core of Crete begins working with SVG, it will be possible to work on usability of vector tools, because they were also created to work with text documents, presentations and tables.

And, of course, 24 additional stretch goals are also announced in the Kickstarter campaign. If the collected amount exceeds the minimum value, all project sponsors will be able to vote which of the additional functions they want to see in the next versions of Crites. The main difference from the past years is that now each of the sponsors will be able to vote for the five (!) Most he liked stretch goals. Then the goals with the most votes will be realized.

By the way, the largest of the strech-targets will be the automation of Kryts using scripts in Python! This is exactly what users have been asking for a long time!
