The origami robot needs to be swallowed: in the stomach it will unfold and start working.

A team of scientists from MIT, Sheffield University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology have developed an origami robot . It is able to transform, and it can also be controlled remotely. If necessary, it can be swallowed so that then it can be used for simple surgery inside the stomach.

The rolled-up robot is packaged in pork intestinal casing (like sausage), which then dissolves in the gastric juice. The robot turns into a working position and can then be controlled with an external magnet (the robot itself also has a small magnet).

This is not the first unfolding robot, whose structure is based on origami. This model is designed specifically to help people who have swallowed a battery-tablet - and such people only in the United States, according to MIT, there are 3,500 people a year.

Usually swallowed pill successfully passes through the digestive system and out on their own. But sometimes it can stick to the wall of the stomach or esophagus, and cause chemical burns. A folding robot can be brought to the battery, after which it will capture it and detach it from the organ wall.

To test the robot, the researchers made a model of the stomach in a section of silicone. Diluted lemon juice was used to emulate gastric juice. The robot successfully showed itself in the task of detaching the tablet from the stomach.

The next task was for engineers to add various sensors to the robot and to change its structure, which would allow it to move independently without the need for an external magnetic field.
