On January 21, 2016, hackers managed to steal 508.67 million rubles from the correspondent account of the Russian International Bank (RMB) at the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, Interfax reports. The incident was reported by the bank itself in its report under IFRS.
Earlier, the bank reported that the hacker attack led to the request of the management to disconnect the bank from the BESP system (Bank electronic urgent payments). RBC, thus, became the first bank in Russia, which reported the theft of funds from its account in the Central Bank by hackers. Part of the funds managed to return.
“As a result of active work with the Bank of Russia and banks-counterparties, the amount of funds returned amounted to 336 million rubles,” the report says. But 131.88 million rubles went to hackers. And this is about two percent of the capital of the financial organization itself. The bank reports on the establishment of a criminal case under the article "fraud" on the fact of unauthorized debiting of funds.
After the proceedings, the RMB had to change the internal documents, including the Business Continuity and Recovery Plan (ONIVD). In addition, additional specialized software was acquired to detect anomalous network activity, and measures were taken to enhance the information security of the bank.
