Volvo engineer called Tesla Motors' autopilot a “tubby” real autonomous system

Victor Trent, Volvo's senior accident prevention technical manager, criticized Tesla's autopilot in an interview with The Verge . In particular, he said that "this system promises more than it can in fact," called it "semi-automatic rudimentary technology" and "unsupervised bathbaby ."

From his interview with The Verge:
')
[...] Next year, Volvo launches its autopilot called Drive Me. This will be a 4th level system that does not require driver participation at all. She will be able not only to drive a car, but she will be able to cope with any extreme situation on her own. If the autopilot realizes that something is wrong with the driver, the system will park the car on the side of the road.

Volvo is working hard on an autonomous car of the 4th level, while the Tesla autopilot has only the 3rd level. The difference is that the autonomous system of the 3rd level still returns control of the car back to the driver in case of extreme situations. The person who manages Tesla relies on the autopilot in everything, however, in the event of an emergency, he can simply become confused. The car of the 4th level does not require human participation in order to keep everything under control in any development of events, according to jalopnik.com .

Volvo’s philosophy and autonomous technology development reflect the automaker’s commitment to safety. In the future, if any of the autonomous Volvo cars get into an accident, the company will take full responsibility.

At the moment, the Tesla autopilot system is considered the most advanced on the market, although Volvo’s argument about its [Tesla] inability to cope with driving under extreme conditions is credible.

We can only wait and see if Volvo will confirm his words with deeds.
