Round table on gaming industry trends: video and summary
In April 2016, a round table discussion on gaming industry trends was held. You can read about the list of participants in the article-announcement , and in this post I offer you a video of the event and briefly tell you about what was discussed. So, here is the first part of the video. Details and two other parts under the cut.
')
We started with a question about gaming platforms, which of them are popular now and which will be popular in the near future . All noted the popularity of the mobile platform and its relative availability for novice teams. PC platform is also popular and will remain in demand in the near future. But about social games there is a strong opinion that due to a change in the technological base, this is not the best time to enter it. Console games as a starting platform are not suitable for beginner teams, especially in Russia. The VR platform is only at the very beginning, interesting to many, but very few people know that it will become popular in the near future.
Then we talked about genres in games . It was noted that the popularity of genres depends on the platform, as well as the country where it is planned to release the game.
Following the genres, the speakers began to talk about the setting . They focused on the dependence of the popularity of the setting on the genre of the game and the national peculiarities of the country where the game comes out. The historical settings (tanks, Second World War, Middle Ages) are currently the most popular and in demand.
And here the first video ends, the second begins:
It talked about the professions in demand in game devs . All agreed that now and in the future, the professions of programmers, game designers, and experienced producers and PMs will be relevant.
Then they discussed monetization models , among which free-to-play is the most popular and works well, but there is a tendency to reduce the direct influence of the donate size on the player’s capabilities, as for example implemented in the game Legue of Legends. We also discussed other models, including freemium.
With regard to the release of games in various countries , the specificity and incomprehensibility (for Russians) of the Chinese market was noted. Everyone advised to release the game to a Western audience, but at the same time use Russia and Canada as regions for softlaunch.
The round table ended with an hour block, where the spectators themselves asked their questions about the games and their production :
They asked and discussed how relevant global and step-by-step strategies, perspectives of games for young children are relevant from the point of view of indie development, how popular VR business projects are, merchandise in games, the use of neurotechnologies in games, the impact of the adult video industry on virtual reality, integration games and offline events, what fate awaits fighting games on VR, what the game industry lacks, how to get through Steam Greenlight, where to get money for game development and much more.
