You have probably heard more than once that fundamental science is experiencing purely market relations around itself worse than all other sectors. Probably, one project can become a counterexample, at the very farthest orbit of which I suddenly found myself. There is a case of funding modern Russian businesses basic research. In the end, science is not the only Swiss particle accelerator, there are interesting projects much closer.
In 1993, Oleg Deripaska graduated from the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University. Now no one needed to explain who this is. He has been a member of the board of trustees for a long time, and he has already financed various university programs.
Since the end of the 60s, a group of scientists Vladimir Skulachev has been researching the aging process. In general, they now share a free-radical concept, which suggests that the weakening of vital functions with age mainly occurs as a result of the oxidation of biopolymers by active forms of oxygen. But shared with a number of important reservations, in accordance with which they work. Like any normal scientists, the Skulachev group has long wanted to hack the aging program. Ideally, at the genome level, but this is not the case yet. While doing pharmacology, i.e. antioxidants that remove excess reactive oxygen species from cells. If we accept Skulachev's amendments to the free-radical concept, no one has yet created the right antioxidants.

Oleg Deripaska has a
Russian-Asian investment company , RAInCo. She finances
two venture projects . One of them, Mitotechnology, has all the rights to the results of the project Practical Use of Skulachev Ions. Mitotechnology in shares belongs to RAInKo and MSU. In principle, the first selling result may appear this year. It will not be a cure for old age, it will be an ophthalmic veterinary drug. There is such an auxiliary direction. If scientists with administrators are not able to quarrel and bring the project to real products, even if it is not the main antioxidant, but the same drugs obtained in auxiliary areas, then I will consider this a successful example of cooperation between sharks of business and basic science.
