Solar powered Solar Impulse 2 completed flight across the Pacific Ocean

On the night of April 23 (April 24 at about 10 am Moscow time) the solar-powered Solar Impulse 2 plane landed on the San Francisco Bay. In the video below - flying over the Golden Gate Bridge. This is not the longest journey - it was a flight from Japan to Hawaii over a distance of more than 8,000 kilometers. However, this is an important event: the plane completed the flight across the Pacific Ocean.

In San Francisco, the plane met Sergey Brin.

Solar Impulse 2 began the world tour on March 9, 2015. The team expected to complete the journey in 5 months, during which the plane would have been in flight for 25 days and would have covered 35 thousand kilometers. Each stop is accompanied by events dedicated to the environment and the use of renewable energy sources. Technical difficulties and weather conditions have made their adjustments, and the project has been going on for over a year.

The moment of truth for Bertrand Picard , the founder of the Solar Impulse project, was to be a five-day flight of a solar-powered plane across the Pacific Ocean. On June 29, 2015, the plane departed from the airport in the Japanese city of Nagoya, where it made an emergency landing , and on July 3 at about seven in the evening it touched the landing strip in Hawaii. For this flight, the plane paid a high price - the batteries overheated and were damaged, and therefore the continuation of the journey was postponed to April 2016 .

The eighth round-the-world flight ended on April 23, 2016, when Solar Impulse 2 reached San Francisco Bay . The flight took three days, during which time Bertrand Picard at the helm of the aircraft traveled 4,300 kilometers.

The team in San Francisco met Sergey Brin.

Celebrate a happy landing.
