Facebook is actively developing its artificial intelligence system for pattern recognition in photos and is now working on the implementation of this technology in video. At the F8 conference in San Francisco, a Facebook representative said that the company has a separate team that is working on a feature that allows people to be automatically tagged on videos,
techcrunch reports .
Machine Learning Director Joaquin Candela said that the idea is to allow users to search for people in any videos they once shared. As an example, you can take a live broadcast, during which a person enters a room, talks with you for a short time, and then leaves. Other users of this person would be extremely difficult to find on Facebook, but soon the social network will be able to automatically index every moment a video, after which this moment can be found by the name of a friend.
Facebook is also working on automatic captioning technology for videos. The company is confident that it can use the same object recognition technology for video that it uses to detect objects in static photos.

The ultimate goal is to make Facebook “more compliant” to video and live broadcasts in order to compete with platforms such as
Periscope or
Snapchat . In the future, the social network wants everyone on Earth to share video, whether it be a 360-degree panorama of a drilling rig, stream or video from a drone. And understanding what is happening in these videos will allow the company to make its video platform even more powerful. However, it is not clear yet what type of commercial or advertising benefits such features will bring Facebook in the long run.
