Apple patent for “Customizable Input Device for Electronic Devices,” which the company filed for the application on September 28, 2015. The described device is a keyboard-free alternative to the mechanical keyboard we are used to, made in the form of a touch-sensitive touchpad occupying almost the entire area of the working surface. We invite you to familiarize yourself with the available information and form your opinion on the concept.

As you already understood, we are talking about a “keyboard without keys”, or rather, a sensory simulation of a mechanical keyboard that we are used to, where haptic user feedback, creating the effect of the presence of a real key, is provided thanks to Force Touch technology. One of the indisputable advantages of the proposed concept is the possibility of flexible software configuration of the keyboard interface in accordance with the user's preferences. Thus, if the idea is implemented, the user will be able to select and customize both the individual buttons and their location on the touchpad surface at will, and, if necessary, also quickly rebuild the composition and configuration in accordance with the requirements of the problem being solved.

You can, for example, place a block of numeric keys in the desired segment when working in Excel, or optimize a block of keys for the game world. It is assumed that the keyboard shortcuts on the touchpad can be set and specific function keys that are not available on standard keyboards.

The proposed solution opens up new opportunities for Mac developers, who, in addition to applications, will be able to develop programmable keyboard units of the desired composition and configuration, ensuring maximum functionality and comfort when working with a specific software.
In addition to the advantages listed above, this solution will allow for the creation of an opportunity to reduce the thickness and more rational use of the internal space of the body.
If the ideas of Apple engineers were to be embodied in reality, it would be naive to expect that this will happen, at least within the next year.
