The computer wrote a new painting by Rembrandt 347 years after the artist’s death

An advertising agency from Amsterdam commissioned by ING Bank analyzed more than 300 paintings by 17th century Dutch artist Rembrandt Haarmens van Rijn, created an algorithm capable of repeating the techniques of the great artist, and printed a portrait of a 17th century man in a 3D printer.



At the first stage of the project Next Rembrandt , the development team analyzed about 346 paintings of the famous artist. For this purpose, 3D scanners were used to capture the smallest details, and they created an algorithm that can exactly repeat the Rembrandt style.

At the second stage, I had to choose what exactly the algorithm would write. The team made a decision: it will be a portrait of a white man with facial hair, aged 30-40 years, in black clothes, with a collar and a hat. To create this portrait, it was necessary to reveal the techniques used by the master.

Rembrandt is called the great master of chiaroscuro. In the video below, the developers draw attention to the fact that the artist's paintings are actually voluminous, which is achieved with the help of paint layers. Therefore, the picture created by the algorithm was not just printed, but used for this a 3D printer and 13 layers of ink based on ultraviolet ink.



The result of the work leaves a double impression. On the one hand, we know that this is a computer. On the other hand, if you put several Rembrandt paintings next to each other, very few people will be able to distinguish this particular portrait.
