Bento Lab - your personal DNA lab in a laptop bag

Welcome to the pages of the blog iCover ! Is it possible to test and analyze DNA at home? - The answer to this question until recently looked quite definite. An attempt to change the situation and give such an opportunity to both amateurs who comprehend the basics of genetics and professionals who, for various reasons, do not have access to expensive laboratory equipment, is offered by a London startup Bento Lab. A couple from London really managed to create a compact device the size of an average laptop. The dynamics of fundraising is one of the indicators of a decent starting potential of the project, it looks quite encouraging: until the end of the campaign on Kikstarter, another two and a half weeks, and the amount requested by the project has already been exceeded 2.5 times.

An active survey of the potential target audience, conducted by the authors of a unique development, confirmed: this device is in demand today. And to have at your disposal a mobile DNA laboratory weighing 5 kg is interested, as in the scientific community, since the operational test can be obtained with the help of Bento Lab where access to expensive stationary equipment is not available. Bento Labs will be able to find molecular kitchen chefs, students just starting to learn the basics of genetics, animal experts, foragers, mycologists researching mushrooms, farmers, beer manufacturers, athletes testing the blood composition for the presence and concentration of the ACTN3 endurance gene, people interested in food consumption at the molecular level, and many others.

Bento Lab will allow, using a biological sample, to extract its DNA and conduct a simple genetic analysis. The process is divided into three stages. It is possible to isolate DNA from a biological sample — the hair follicle, saliva, meat fragment, mushroom mycelium, etc., by means of a centrifuge. You can select the desired DNA fragment and get millions of copies from it using a thermal cycler. Visual viewing and interpretation of the result is possible due to gel electrophoresis and illuminated platinum instrument.

Bento Lab will be available in two versions. The composition of the basic set implies that the user has a knowledge base in molecular biology. A set of accessories and reagents will be supplied with the device. Thus, the cost of 549 pounds sterling (about 53,000 rubles) is the cost of the laboratory itself, the installation for helium electrophoresis, a transilluminator, a power cable, and an instruction manual.

An additional set that includes a booklet for beginner geneticists, PCR reagents, reagents for DNA extraction and analysis, a laboratory pipette, a couple of boxes with additional pipette nozzles, sterile wadding for DNA collection will cost 149 pounds. Anyone who acquires Bento Lab project authors guarantee consulting support in Skype for six months.

I would very much like the enthusiast authors of the Bento Lab device, which is unique today, to succeed or better than they expected. In accordance with their plans, the first sets with compact laboratories will be sent to customers from November 2016.
