Video: Birds of the Antarctic are able to recognize a specific person.
The fact that crows, parrots, magpies and mockingbirds recognize a person is long known - these birds live among humans. It turned out that the birds of the Antarctic, namely, brown skuas, are capable of this: they recognize the particular person who had previously examined their nests. And distinguish it from other guests.
Scientists from South Korea have discovered that brown skuas living in the Antarctic can recognize a person who has previously examined their nests and eggs laid in them. Yeong-Deok Han from Inha University says that he had to defend himself against the attacks of skua. Including during the moments when besides him there were other researchers. And even the change of clothes did not help - the birds recognized him and began to pursue.
The team conducted a series of experiments. They checked the nests once a week, and the birds attacked people who did not come for the first time. ')
To check whether the birds really recognize the person, and not just attack the first person, two scientists approached the birds and then went in different directions. One of these scientists has already approached the nests, and the second - no. Birds began to pursue someone who was not seen for the first time.
To remember your enemy, the birds just need to see him 3-4 times. The author of the study, Dr. Won Young Lee from the Korean Polar Research Institute, is confident that this fact shows the high cognitive abilities of skuas. Earlier, the brain potential of Antarctic animals has not been studied.
