“Holoport” from Microsoft with the help of glasses of mixed reality HoloLens
Microsoft has introduced a development that researchers Interactive 3D Technologies called holoportaiton. This is a teleconferencing system based on the use of a HoloLens helmet. Its feature is the creation of the illusion of human presence. HoloLens wearing glasses sees another participant in the conversation as if he is in the same room with him. In reality, the interlocutor can be removed for hundreds, thousands of kilometers.
HoloLens Mixed Reality Glasses are Microsoft's investment in the now popular virtual reality trend. Many players and giants of the market presented their helmets: Oculus Rift, Google Cardboard, Valve HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR and others. Others just want to join the BP hysteria: this is the Sony PlayStation 4K , there are rumors about Apple’s plans. Almost all such helmets are exclusively devices for displaying information and capturing the position of the head, so that the computer can know which picture to give.
This is what makes HoloLens different. HoloLens would be worth comparing with another project - Google Glass, which aimed to create a daily assistant. Unlike Glass, HoloLens tries to occupy a niche device for gamers and productive workers who need visualization. Promotional materials speak of this. In the presentations flashed the opportunity to see the world of Minecraft on the table in the living room or play with spectacular destruction . The glasses were sent to the International Space Station to allow astronauts to test HoloLens usage scenarios. ')
A helmet running Windows 10 projects objects onto transparent lenses, creating the illusion of augmented or mixed reality. It is not just an output device. The glasses have a built-in computer with 2 GB of RAM. Available at 120 to 120 degrees, camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. However, the exact characteristics of HoloLens are not yet known. The consumer version is only in the plans so far, and the developer version for a symbolic 3000 dollars should begin to arrive on March 31.
Microsoft has published a video about the "holoportitsii." As in the case of HoloLens, the name does not need to be understood literally: teleportation, holograms or naked people are not involved here. At the beginning of the video shows how in the vision of researchers, people will communicate in the future.
Then Microsoft decided to put pressure on parental feelings, and forced the father and daughter to talk. It is noticeable that the little girl did not wear glasses: apparently, HoloLens of the required size was not found. The recorded can be lost and execute the order 66 . A “hologram” with a recording can be reduced and placed, for example, on a coffee table. The concept is not only intended to allow close communication with loved ones, but also to play back memories.
Only the general principles of the holoporting are known. Neither the exact technical specifications nor the cost of installation are called. Several 3D cameras surround the area. They capture the position of a person inside. His body is described by a 3D model in real time. The data stream is compressed and sent to the other end. There he is recovering. On the HoloLens glasses screen, the desired picture appears on the interlocutor's head.
The result - communication as if the other person is in the same room. It is clear that touch or beat him will not succeed. Also, Microsoft is silent about not the highest viewing angle points. It will probably turn out that the interlocutor hovers slightly in the air, disrupting the effect of immersion.
It is unclear when Microsoft will show more details about the holoportation or at least answer questions. For example, how will the system perceive the mirror? Next week in San Francisco will be a conference for developers of Microsoft Build . Perhaps something will be mentioned there. A detailed report is also likely at the SIGGRAPH annual computer graphics conference at the end of July. But this is only speculation.
The names and principles allow us to recall not only “Star Wars”, but the series “Silicon Valley”.The head of Hooli , a parody of a technology giant like Oracle, Google or Microsoft, communicates through holographic technology acquired in the baggage of another company.
