The territory within a radius of ten kilometers from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which suffered the most during the 1986 accident , is planned to be turned into a dump of nuclear waste. The head of the State Agency of Ukraine for the management of the Chernobyl NPP Alienation Zone, Vitaly Petruk, commented on this decision as follows: “People cannot live on the contaminated land for another 500 years, so we plan to make it an industrial complex.”

“The less affected areas of the exclusion zone (located beyond the“ ring ”of 10 kilometers) will act as a kind of“ buffer ”between the landfill and populated areas,” he added.

The complex will be used for the storage and processing of nuclear waste, including spent nuclear fuel from power plants in Ukraine.

“We are considering options for building a facility using alternative energy sources, such as solar panels, in order to effectively use the remaining parts of the electricity infrastructure in the region, including the Chernobyl nuclear power plant,” said Petruk. It is also planned to attract foreign companies to create the complex.

How exactly will be monitored leakage of waste and their processing in the area close to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, a place with maximum contamination and a radioactive background in the entire exclusion zone, the official does not specify.
