Video: traffic lights will not be needed on the future roads

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have calculated that modern roads will be able to withstand twice as much traffic if traffic lights are removed. This is what we will come to when (and if) on the roads of the common user all cars will be robotized and connected to V2V systems.

Already today, sensors are being installed in cars that maintain the distance between them and the vehicle ahead. In the future, instead of stopping at traffic lights, cars will be able to communicate with each other in order to safely turn and cross over intersections. So existing roads will be able to provide a greater flow of cars and other vehicles - including bicycles .

A team of scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has published a study on how to overcome crossroads in the future. The video below shows the “dance” of cars at the intersection and a comparison of such a system with the work of a traffic light at the intersection.

By 2020, there will be 250 million broadband-connected cars on the roads. Their interaction will lead to a decrease in the number of emergency situations. Drivers will be able to see what is happening around the corner. But this is still not enough to remove the traffic lights.

In 2009, Peter Stone, an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin, a specialist in artificial intelligence, saw the intersections of the future as shown in this video . Car-robots, in his opinion, are capable of making the transport system much more efficient, and each intersection should be controlled by an autonomous intelligent agent, which regulates the mode of movement of each car individually.
