Rub Goldberg vs Isaac Newton

Welcome to the pages of the blog iCover ! If you are able to see the complex in a simple, then you have every chance to create your own Goldberg machine and replenish the archive from hundreds of already created devices that have not found practical application, and possibly get into the Guinness Book of Records. In our today's material we will tell about some of these amazing machines, which are sometimes called "stupid". In fact, some of them are fully capable of becoming the property of the treasury of world engineering thought.

Brief introduction: the Robinson-Goldberg machine (Goldberg machine, Ruba Goldberg machine, Robby Goldberg) is named after American cartoonist and inventor Ruba Goldberg and English artist William Robinson. It is believed that it was in their heads that the idea of creating the first device, which marked the beginning of a whole subculture of mechanical machines of intentionally complicated machines operating on the principle of domino, was born.

If you see a device in front of you that performs the simplest action in an extremely complicated way and, as a rule, uses a long chain of consecutive events to achieve the final goal, you should know that the Goldberg machine is in front of you. And the longer the sequence of operations - the more perfect and steeper the car is. When they tell you that you are trying to invent a Goldberg machine, they hint that you overly complicate simple and obvious things.
')
By perfecting the mechanism they understand, the inventors often display a remarkable imagination, use the most incredible tools, tools and materials for this purpose, but sometimes give rise to ideas that deserve close attention from the point of view of the rational grain sown in them ...

In the overwhelming majority of cases, Goldberg machines are still used for entertainment or advertising purposes. That is, for example, the idea of using an insane machine was decided by the creators from Samsung. And I must say, it turned out quite funny and original:

Some Ruby followers are aiming to gain a foothold in the pages of the Guinness Book of Records and demonstrate enviable patience and ingenuity on the way to the goal. Sometimes the result can be achieved, and then something like this appears:

It is noteworthy that, as we have seen above, not only home-grown inventors, but also engineers of famous companies, compete in the art of technical improvisation. One of them was the Japanese company Seiko, which proposed its own vision of the Ruba Goldberg machine. As befits a very reputable watch brand, Seiko managed to set its own record in the Guinness Book and create the smallest Goldberg machine in the world, combining almost 1,200 parts in one plan, some of which do not exceed 1 mm in size! Despite its size, the Goldberg machine performed by Seiko is a kind of large-scale historical retrospective, a design consisting only of the details of the watch movements of the models created by the company at different stages of development.

One of the genuine masterpieces of the world gallery of Goldberg machines, of course, was the recently introduced Martin Molina music machine. Martin's car has already been covered in our portal, but in case any of the readers for some reason passed by this fascinating material, we very briefly recall what was said.

Wintergatan Marble Machine is a wooden, fully mechanical self-organizing musical “combine”, controlled by a manual drive and a complex system consisting of gears, cranks, a variety of sophisticated levers and parts that are not yet named. The sound is born due to the use of 2000 balls moved along conveyor belts inside the device in the direction of an improvised, but functioning vibraphone, percussion band, metallophone, bass guitar. Marble Machine, perhaps, an exception from the general range of Goldberg machines, is a machine, each element of which carries its own functional load and serves the ultimate goal of creating a musical composition.

The number of parts, most of which are made of wood, exceeds 3000! In total, the development of the project with the processing of data and graphic sketches in a computer program and the subsequent implementation of the plan in its final form, Martin took four years. 14 months of them took the implementation of the practical part - the manufacture of components, assembly and adjustment of the music machine.

And this is what came out of it:

The theme of Rube Goldberg machines is inexhaustible and it can be continued indefinitely. But, unfortunately, there is no such possibility - and today we will have to deal with quite earthly and meaningful matters and concerns. And in conclusion, I would like to present another version of the Goldberg machine from the 2D House studio, confidently defying the laws of classical mechanics ...)
