VR & ASMR

Virtual reality technology is gradually penetrating new areas of work and leisure of humanity. There was no exception and the direction of videos for relaxation ASMR. YouTube has included support for 360 ° video, and ASMR artists have new cameras at their disposal. But for now, these videos are experiments and a search for a new format. I suggest you look at the path that VR ASMR managed to make.

Small educational program

If you first hear the abbreviation ASMR, I offer you a very brief explanation of what it is. An autonomous sensory meridional response (Autonomous sensory meridian response) is a pleasant tingling sensation, goose bumps, spreading over the skin, usually from the back of the head, and arising in response to specific triggers. A simple test of your sensitivity to ASMR is this video:

According to the results of a survey on Geektimes from ASMR video, 15% felt very pleasant, 31% described their feelings as pleasant, 20% did not like the video or even caused fear / disgust. The remaining 34% did not feel anything. Despite the small amount of sampling here, the presence of pleasant sensations is confirmed by the fact that ASMR-videos are popular, gaining millions of views on YouTube.
Triggers can be whispers, tapping, rustling, smooth movements of the hands, role-playing games with the care of the viewer (for example, haircut). ASMR is used to relax, improve falling asleep or just to get pleasant sensations. Despite the fact that ASMR is already writing scientific articles and even dissertations, its mechanism of action has not yet been disclosed.

VR experiments

Studio ASMR-advanced artist has long included a 3D microphone for a more expressive effect. It is logical that the possibility of deep role immersion, which gives a virtual reality, will try to use in the ASMR. In the spring of 2015, the K3YS project was announced, in which three popular ASMR artists, ASMRRequests, GentleWhispering and Heather Feather ASMR, took part.

The first pancake came out, rather, a lump - due to camera restrictions, the artists could not come close (and the proximity to the viewer is one of the triggers), the video was on a separate resource that normally worked only in Chrome and managed to slow it down.

YouTube added support for 360 ° video as early as March 2015, but the first native ASMR video did not appear there immediately. Only in August, ASMRRequests arranged an interesting experiment, superimposing its 2D image on the 3D render of a fantastic environment, shooting the role-playing video “ASMR in the Future”:

This method has obvious drawbacks - the artist on a flat screen inside the scene is still far away, and the scene itself does not participate in the interaction with the audience. Only recently there were cameras that allowed artists to come close to the viewer. In new videos it is now possible to get a virtual hug:

Fumigated with smoke from all sides:

Or painted:

Artists try new experimental formats. ASMR Destiny released the camera into the car in the video that was released just the other day:

Alas, while it is clear that dynamic video suffers from the fact that different cameras are shaking differently, and this leads to out of sync sections of the image.

We live in an interesting time, when virtual reality grows in new, yet experimental formats. I am sure that progress will give us new forms of art, culture, knowledge and entertainment with VR.
