For cyclists: the world's first wearable power meter

A cyclist needs a speed meter or is not needed - everyone decides for himself. It all depends on the approach to training and on the ultimate goals. But it is clear that alternatives to this device for controlling one’s own physical condition and planning for reaching the peak of the form have not yet been invented. Probably, many people would like to get a “power meter”, but the prices for them bite. Shimano 9000 - about $ 3,000, Power2Max FSA Gossamer - about $ 900, Garmin Vector - almost $ 1,700. And what is also important - all these models are mounted only in the design of the bike. Either in the pedal, or in the sleeve, or in the connecting rod.

Irish developers from Brim Drothers presented on Kickstarter a draft power meter for cyclists Zone DPMX ™, which is guaranteed to “kill” all competitors with two main points. For a start, the price - today it can be ordered for just 390 euros (one-leg gadget). And the second point - Zone DPMX ™ is attached directly to the cycle shoe. True, there is an important question about field tests of measurement accuracy, which has not yet been covered on the project page. Although basic measurement errors are indicated.

Design

The device is completely waterproof and consists of two parts connected by a bus:



A sensor measuring cadence is mounted in the upper unit. At the bottom - calibrated strain gauge, which measures the force pressing the pedal. By the way, the Zone DPMX ™ device works only with fastening on Speedplay® Zero road pedals, but now you will not surprise anyone, for 6 thousand rubles they are sold in stores.



How it works

So, by measuring the angular speed of the pedals and the pressing force, Zone DPMX ™ can transfer this data to any bike computer with ANT +. The result on the screen is reflected in the form of the power generated in watts, the percentage distribution of effort on the right and left leg (if we talk about a set of two sensors, 780 euros) and cadence:



After training, all data can be analyzed on the monitor screen.

Specifications

The weight of Zone DPMX ™ for one leg is only 44 grams, it works from a Li-ion battery for 15 hours without recharging. The device is completely waterproof. Accuracy of measurement of force - 2%, cadence - 0.5 rpm.

The temperature range is from -10 to +60 degrees Celsius.
