The film about the winners of Google Lunar XPRIZE will appear on YouTube on March 17

The Moon Shot documentary trailer appeared on YouTube and tells about the winners of the Google Lunar XPRIZE contest. The film will consist of 9 episodes and will be first published on the Google Play store on March 15. A little later, on March 17, he will appear on YouTube. The film’s authors are the British director Orlando von Einsiedel (Orlando von Einsiedel) and the executive producer JJ Abrams, who filmed not only the latest Star Wars, but also the well-known series Lost (Lost).

It is worth recalling that in the Google Lunar XPRIZE competition, scientific and engineering teams compete for a prize of $ 30 million, which will be used to create and send a robotic apparatus to the moon. Thus, this project should become one of the largest ones financed by a private company. The level of competition can be assessed due to the following facts: the Israeli team is supported by SpaceX Ilona Mask, and Audi helps their competitors from Germany.

According to the conditions of the competition, in which 16 teams took part, the spacecraft must deliver a robotic lunar rover to the Earth’s satellite, which should be able to move at least 500 meters across the lunar surface and transmit HD-quality video. The project should be ready by December 31, 2017. In late January, it became known that five companies from the USA, Japan, Germany and India - Astrobotic, Hakuto, Moon Express, Part-Time Scientists and Team Indus - have already received cash prizes for the development of their vehicles.

For example, the company Astrobotic expects that their device with the code name Griffin starts from the Earth with the help of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. A lunar rover with a length of 1.6 meters can carry a payload of 262 kg (for comparison, Curiosity can carry 900 kg) and should land on the surface of the moon in the same way as “adult” devices.
