As it became known this week , the Indian Point nuclear power plant in the village of Buchanan, New York State (USA), stopped working for several hours last December. The reason for the stop was bird droppings.
On December 14, 2015, the flow of litter from the “big bird”, as indicated in the report, hit the electrical equipment of the nuclear power plant, which led to an automatic shutdown. As explained in the report, the litter could get on the contacts when the bird lifted from the perch and flew. The substance shorted the wires on the power transmission line, which led to the emergence of an electric arc.
The authors of the report mention that contact droppings may cause a short circuit, a power outage and even the death of a bird as a result of an electric shock. Fortunately, no dead birds were found near the pedestal.

It is also stressed that the incident did not pose any threat to the environment or the public. It is planned to install additional protection against birds in order to avoid similar incidents in the future.
Since June 2012, it was already the 13th unplanned outage of the power plant. The report does not indicate how many of them were caused by bird excrement, and also what kind of birds were these. Maybe the Siberian hounds? ..
