The official WhatsApp blog
reports that by the end of 2016, the company will stop supporting and releasing updates for its messenger for a number of outdated operating systems. The company includes Blackberry (even the latest version of the system - Blackberry 10, which appeared in 2012), Nokia S40, S60, Android 2.1 and 2.2, as well as Windows Phone 7.1.
The company explains its decision very simply: the world of operating systems has changed dramatically since 2009, when the first version of WhatsApp appeared. Then 70% of all smartphones were sold by Nokia and Blackberry, whereas now Google’s operating systems from Google, Apple and Microsoft collectively occupy 99.5% of the market. Thus, the engineers would like to concentrate their efforts on the truly sought-after devices.
Today, WhatsApp has released an
update number 2.12.14 for iOS. About a month ago, the company announced that this update will be very large and will include more than 50 new features. Among them, you can call your own browser, which is designed to view links directly from the messenger, export chat history in zip format, end-to-end encryption for chats and groups, as well as other improvements, such as choosing the background for the chat. A version with similar functions for Android should appear at the end of March.
In addition, at the beginning of this year, WhatsApp made another
decision regarding the fee for using its service: the small subscription fee was already canceled, and advertising should be replaced with the opportunity "... use WhatsApp to support communication with companies and organizations you want to receive news from For example, get information from your bank about fraudulent transactions or from the airline about the flight delay.
