Amazon quietly removed encryption on Fire tablets

While Apple and Google are enhancing cryptographic protection for mobile devices, another technology giant, Amazon, has taken a strange step in the opposite direction. In the latest version of the operating system, Fire OS 5, the company has removed cryptography support .

The operating system Fire OS is installed in e-books, tablets and smartphones Fire Tablet, Kindle Fire and Fire Phone. However, it is reported that the update with the rejection of encryption is released only for tablets. Even in this case, it affects the interests of millions of users. Now you can easily remove personal data from a stolen tablet.

Fire OS is a fork of the free Android operating system, based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code, but lacking a set of applications and services from Google.

Encryption at the operating system level protects the personal data of the owner in case the device falls into the wrong hands. The encryption key is directly linked to a password known only to the owner. Previously, data was encrypted using a fairly simple procedure.

Failure to encrypt goes against the declared policy of Amazon, which is included in the list of more than 40 companies, organizations and experts who have expressed support for Apple in the legal opposition to the FBI, along with Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Intel and others.

Amazon's decision caused a wave of negative feedback on support forums , blogs and social networks .

A company spokesman for Amazon commented on the situation : he said that the company removed some corporate functions from the operating system that were not popular.

Amazon got an encryption function along with AOSP, so it's sad to see it being forcibly turned off supposedly “out of use”.

UPD. Encryption is returned to Fire OS 5 .
