iCover ! Panasonic has announced an uncompressed video signal transmission technology as 8K over a fiber optic network with removable sections using special design connectors.

The 8K-quality video signal is an image of about 33 million pixels (7680 x 4320) in size, transmitted at up to 120 frames per second. For comparison: Full HD is just 2 million pixels (1920 x 1080) at up to 60 frames per second, 4K is about 8 million pixels (3840 x 2160) and 60 fps.
Until now, video transmission in the 8K format from the source to the consumer-side device was carried out using 4 HDMI cables with a breakdown of the image into 4K equivalents, glued together in 8K at the reception using special video processing programs. Due to the complexity of the exact alignment of the optical axes of different network sections, signal transmission over a fiber optic cable in networks with removable sections and connected equipment turned out to be quite laborious. The cable of the new type and technology proposed by the engineers of the concern Panasonic and KAI Photonics Co., Ltd., created on the basis of the Japanese Keio University, open up the possibility to transmit 8K video over long distances with minimal losses.

A special-shaped connector built into plastic fiber optic cable, connecting according to the “ballpoint pen” principle, was developed in the Mitsubishi Pensil division in collaboration with Professor Yasuhiro Koyke from Keio University. Thanks to the use of multi-level modulation technology for a wideband signal, the bandwidth of one channel was able to be expanded to 100 Gbit / s, which made it possible to remove restrictions on working with uncompressed video as 8K.
The next step of the development team is to refine the status of the technology to the level of the international standard in order to mass use of 8K devices in the B2B segment.
