OpenROV Trident Underwater Drone

The OpenROV team (Open Source Underwater Robot) launched the Trident underwater drone. This small drone is incredibly agile and moves quickly under water.

According to the developers:
After four years of designing and piloting drones, studying their features and specifics of work, we took a different look at what a real underwater drone should be.

The Trident drone has a unique design that combines multi-functionality, ROV (remotely controlled vehicle) control, and AUV (autonomous underwater vehicle) efficiency. He is able to deftly and very carefully maneuver in a limited space, to penetrate into places inaccessible to other devices. In addition, Trident is easy to use and ready to go.

Trident is the second project of the team. The guys first appeared on Kickstarter in 2012 with the version of the budget underwater drone OpenROV. One of the main ideas is the availability of the underwater drone for everyone who wants to explore the underwater bottom.

According to one of the organizers of the project:
Our first workshop was the most ordinary garage. There we collected the original drone prototype for exploring a cave in Northern California, where rumored records of lost treasures were kept. We did not find gold, but we received many messages from all over the world from those who wanted to financially help us in the development of the drone. The Kickstarter project has become the springboard for the company. Since then, we have sent thousands of OpenROVs to people from different countries.

Trident specifications

Every detail of the Trident design is thought out to the smallest detail in order to optimize its activities and increase efficiency in any situation. It is the most convenient to use and moves quickly under water. The speed and accuracy of movement are controlled by three inverter brushless motors that rotate the screws. The uniqueness of the drone’s three-axis system makes it easier to manage, and can easily be moved from side to side, up or down.

Drone circuit

The underwater drone is equipped with a camera that takes pictures in Full HD resolution and at 30 frames per second. A drone can take photos, shoot video, as well as create maps of the seabed and three-dimensional models of underwater sections.

Trident Detailed Description

Specifications

Weight - 2.9 kg;
Maximum speed - 2 m / s;
Autonomous work time - 3 hours;
The maximum depth of immersion is 100 m;
Dimensions - 400 mm x 200 mm x 80 mm.

The drone is equipped with LED "headlights", providing adequate lighting for deep-sea or night dives. An elastic cable is connected to the device (possible length: from 25 m to 100 m), with the help of which information is controlled and transmitted. Trident can be controlled via Wi-Fi via a smartphone, tablet or laptop. The drone is framed with a rubber coating, which protects its frame in a collision with underwater objects.

Software

The aim of the project is to make the lightest, most intuitive in the control of a telo-robotics system of tele-robots. The developers used the latest Internet standards from HTML5 and webRTC to WebVR and WebGL.

Trident management software is an open source project .

Trident Basic Kit includes:

- drone Trident, which is ready to dive;
- 25 meters of control cable (you can order a longer cable up to 100 m);
- a buoy with a Wi-Fi module, through which the drone is controlled from the shore or deck of the boat;
- onboard LiFePO4 batteries, working up to 3 hours, without recharging.

According to the developers:
We built Trident as a complete and versatile tool for researchers. But we also needed to make sure that the drone was suitable for most utilities.

The type of lighting allows you to create a visualization of the underwater bottom, similar to photogrammetry methods that are used by the program to create working areas of 3D models. As in this example visualization (expedition in the area of the island of Fiscado, Greece).

When frames are superimposed over the air drone, a kind of “window” is visually created on the sea.

Trident will be an indispensable tool for fishermen and yacht owners. With it, you can monitor the state of the underwater parts of ships, find damage, find the most fishy places and inspect the shipwreck. The drone is its “eyes” under water.

You can control the device using Oculus Rift

The retail value of OpenROV Trident will be $ 1,199. But those who are the very first to join the financing of the project will be able to get a drone for a donation of $ 599. Deliveries of finished models are scheduled for the end of autumn 2016.
