Few robots are associated with works of art. But the competition, organized by Andrew Conru (Andrew Conru), founder of FriendFinder Networks, sheds light on the ability of robots to be creative.
“Many do not realize that technical areas are inherently very creative. I thought it would be quite interesting to hold an interdisciplinary competition that will unite the world of creativity and technology, ”says Conra.
Participants in the competition Robot Art can provide a work of art or video created by his robot and win a monetary reward. ')
Contestants can participate in two categories: telerobots that are controlled by people, and fully automated machines. The end of the competition is April 14th.
The main prize in the category of automated robots is $ 30,000. The winner in the television robots nomination will take home $ 10,000. In addition, there is a prize of $ 5,000 for the best scientific contribution.
The following are incredible works of art created by robots:
Oliver Deussen and Thomas Lindemeier from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Constance in Germany created an eDavid robot.
In fact, it is a welding robot that is used in the manufacture of cars.
But it is equipped with sensors, camera and computer control to create beautiful works.
eDavid gets the image that it is trying to recreate as a picture.
Gradually, he improves it, using the camera, referring to the original file. After completion, the robot even signs the picture with his name in the lower right corner.
To create his masterpieces, he uses 5 different types of brushes and 24 shades of colors.
Various artistic styles and variations are available to the robot.
Here we see a picture of the University of Konstanz, where the robot was created:
Amazing portrait of George Clooney:
As you can see, the robot can draw in completely different styles.
Here is an artist at work:
But eDavid is not the only one capable of drawing beautiful pictures. Pindar Van Arman, a programmer and artist, also created the bitPaintr creative robot.
Van Arman’s robot looks completely different compared to eDavid. Rather, it falls under the category of television robots, which together with people create works of art.
The man draws with the help of a special application , and the robot does physical work.
But this machine can also use artificial intelligence to complete the design, i.e. it may well fall under the category of fully automated robots, like eDavid.
You can expect excellent results.
The robot takes a snapshot of what he wants to work on, for example, the outline of New York on the horizon, and draws it a little differently:
The robot begins to work with details that are most prominent in the figure, as a rule, these are dark tones, which it gradually brightens. This allows you to create extremely accurate portraits:
But in collaboration with people, the results are more interesting: Portrait of Queen Elizabeth
That is why the category of telerobots is so intriguing: it shows how much can be achieved by combining the efforts and skills of humans and robots:
During the competition itself, Van Arman will allow hundreds of people to work with the robot on portraits.
