Why Tomsk scientists blast ice
Every spring, ice is blown up on the Tom River to avoid congestion during freezing. At this time, the MOE asks residents not to be alarmed when they hear explosions, to comply with security measures and to refrain from fishing on ice floes.
At Tomsk State University, a quarter of a century has been exploring ice, including river ice.
The difficulty of blasting in the case of ice is that there are more than fifteen of its types. Scientists from Tomsk use the mobile laboratory “Research on the behavior of natural materials under explosive loading” to observe the behavior of ice or rock in practice. Laboratory employee Maxim Orlov notes that the objects of research were already snow-covered, snow-white ice cover sandwich structures and natural limestone, then scientists will explore coal and slate limestone.

The mechanics of the SRI PMM of Tomsk State University have developed a program for modeling the behavior of ice, limestone and coal in explosions. This program is already being used by KuzbassSpetsVzryv in preparation for the work - the company also explodes ice on Tom. Scientists are developing a physico-mathematical model of ice behavior under dynamic loads and are working on a numerical method for calculating its shock and explosive loading.
The program can be used in the extraction of natural resources, when rocks and ice prevent access to the deposits, and even when designing aircraft - as some celestial bodies are completely composed of ice.
