"Mythbusters" against the silence conspiracy

The host of the popular TV channel Discovery Mythbusters was at the center of an unpleasant story that captured the minds of conspiracy theorists around the world for a couple of days. A video recording of Adam Savage ’s speech at the Last HOPE conference in New York last week leaked to the network. He stated to an audience of several thousand people that the long-planned release of the program, dedicated to dispelling the myth of the invincibility of contactless payment cards, did not go on the air due to pressure exerted on American Express, Visa and Texas Instruments.

The aforementioned companies allegedly stated about their unwillingness to watch on-air brief instructions on circumventing the protection of RFID cards during a teleconference that TI gathered at the request of the “destroyers” themselves. On the part of the television crew, Adam's colleague Grant Imahara participated in it.

After the story became widespread, representatives of Texas Instruments (one of the leaders in the RFID direction) presented their version of what happened. During that same conference, said company spokeswoman Cindy Huff, technical questions were asked, which were answered. The questions concerned the actual operation of the contactless payment system. A few weeks later, however, the Mythbusters team conveyed to TI that it was decided to change the program’s plot and no longer need help.

Everything was resolved when, on Wednesday, CNET got a comment from Savage. In it, the presenter says that he got it all a bit confused. In his new statement, he confirms Cindy Huff’s version and, moreover, takes the Discovery Channel’s leadership out of history: “The decision not to develop the RFID story was made inside our Beyond Productions studio.”

Needless to say, such a turn in the history of the “international conspiracy of silence” only fueled interest in him. And in the near future, we will surely see more than one investigation of the state of affairs with the protection of ill-fated payment systems.
