Augmented Reality Barcode

A barcode may contain a product number, contact details, web page address, but, in fact, a barcode is something more ...

Canadian scientists have found a way to use barcodes to create “Augmented Reality” - this concept means a fusion of reality and virtual life. They developed the technology ARTag , which allows a computer to project three-dimensional images on objects of the real world, for example, place a virtual three-dimensional map of the city on a real desk - only to see this map you need to look at the table through a video camera connected to a computer.

A virtual map can be “alive” - virtual cars can ride virtual streets, virtual people walk - all this will be displayed in real time right on your desk and to look at the city from the other side, you do not need to move the mouse, but rather will just bypass the table.

The demonstration video shows how several people play ARTcode-shooter - they drive their tanks through the streets of a three-dimensional city and shoot each other.

This system is called Magic Lence - "Magic Points." In addition, the Magic Mirror system was created, which allows you to project a three-dimensional image on your own body and watch yourself on a computer monitor, for example, in knightly armor. For this, it is only necessary to wear a special vest marked with barcodes.

When I think about the prospects of this technology, I become dizzy. These are three-dimensional live illustrations in print media, and three-dimensional images in outdoor advertising, and three-dimensional avatars on business cards, and if you add sound to this, and we’re not just talking about a three-dimensional picture or a cartoon, we’re talking about interactivity. INTERACTIVE! And all that is needed from the user is to have a mobile phone with a video camera and an Internet connection.
