Mobile Operators Launch Campaign Against WiFi

WiFi hotspots are the biggest threat to mobile operators. WiFi technology is the basis for VoIP and in the long term undermines the foundations of the business of cellular companies. In such a situation, mobile operators combine their efforts to confront a competitor.

John Dvorak, on the PC Magazine pages , argues that the mobile operators have entered into an open fight against WiFi. On American TV commercials began to spin, where cellular operators advertise their data networks (Sprint's unlimited EV-DO costs $ 60 per month).

Connecting to the Internet from a mobile device is becoming increasingly popular and affordable service for ordinary people. Recent polls conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project organization showed that 34% of Internet users periodically go online via WiFi or through the network of a cellular operator. Two years ago, there were only 22%. Another interesting fact: every fifth American Internet user can access via WiFi from home, whereas a year ago there were only 10%. The fact is that more and more mobile phone owners prefer to connect to the network via alternative radio channels.

Regular users do not see the difference between the standards of wireless data transmission EDGE, EV-DO (both technologies for mobile communication) and WiFi. By installing an EV-DO modem with a SIM card of their mobile operator in their laptop, some of them are quite sure that they now have WiFi. All these are clear signs that free WiFi is ready to take the place of expensive tariff plans from mobile operators.
