Wireless electricity

Surely many users of personal computers, and other consumer electronics, dream of a complete rejection of the use of wires. And if in the case of information transfer this option is quite possible - by this time a whole range of technologies has been developed, and new, faster and more versatile solutions are emerging, but for powering electronic / electrical devices the failure of wires seemed to be near science fiction. In fact, nothing is impossible, which was confirmed by the August Forum IDF 2008, where at one of the presentations the public was shown a system of wireless power transmission.

')
An employee of Intel, Joshua Smith (Joshua R. Smith), working in team with the physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Marin Soljacic (Marin Soljacic) developed a unique to date transmission system based on the phenomenon of resonant electromagnetic induction. The theoretical framework was developed by MIT employees, and together with Intel researchers, the project, designated WiTricity (Wireless Electricity), has been brought to fruition in hardware.

The installation consists of two antennas (the diameter of the main antenna is slightly more than half a meter), apparently made of copper, one of which creates an electromagnetic field in the space around itself that induces an alternating electric current in the circuit of the second antenna. I must say that even the first prototypes of the system are impressive with their characteristics - during the demonstration, the researchers transmitted electricity, which was enough for a 60-watt light bulb, to a distance of 0.6 to 1.0 meters. The efficiency is rather high - about 75%. In the case of wireless transmission of electricity over a distance of several meters, the efficiency of the installation drops noticeably - up to 50%. But even in this case, the WiTricity installation can be used, for example, to recharge laptop batteries, a mobile phone, a player, etc.

To some regret, we have to admit that a considerable period of time will pass before complete waiver of wires — while Intel plans to prepare a system for wirelessly recharging mobile computers. When it comes to desktop computers, consumer electronics is unknown. But we can confidently say that the new products will have many opponents - there is still talk about the possible influence of the magnetic field of mobile phones on human health, and the WiTricity system should create a much stronger and extended electromagnetic field. Nevertheless, the future is precisely for such solutions, because they allow you to completely abandon the wires, which are not only inconvenient, but in many cases also spoil the home interior.

Very controversial ... After all, in fact there are many assumptions that a constant magnetic field is dangerous for humans. Now, because of the mobile phones, they are sounding the alarm, but what will happen when such modern wireless houses appear, I am afraid to imagine ... Although of course without wires it is much more comfortable.
