Pebble vs. Apple: Campaign Funding Sped Up



The day after Apple’s presentation of its wearable gadgets, including the “luxury” model of watches worth a car, the flow of donations from the Pebble Time project on Kickstarter increased almost threefold. Founder and CEO of the company, Eric Migikovsky, admitted that they expected an increase in interest in the field of wearable gadgets due to the arrival of the largest player in the mobile field.

It turns out that the start of the crowdfunding campaign, which was appointed about two weeks before the presentation of Apple, was very skillfully chosen in terms of strategy. On the one hand, the creators of Pebble managed to raise money from those people who had previously preferred their project to the apple one. If the Apple presentation is successful, then the interest in wearable gadgets will only be heated, and Pebble will also get something. If Apple's new products do not meet the expectations of customers, they will look for an alternative and also turn to Pebble.

It is difficult to say which of the two scenarios played, but what is known for certain, the inflow of funds to the Pebble campaign increased from $ 6,000 per hour on the eve of the presentation to $ 16,000 per hour immediately after it.

Pebble with the first version of its watches has already set a record on Kickstarter in 2012, collecting the maximum amount for that time of $ 10 million. At the moment, their new project has already collected more than $ 18 million, and 11 more days remain before its end. It is possible that they will complete their resounding success, doubling the previous record, and will remain the most successful project on this crowdfunding platform for a long time.

The new project proposes the third generation of watches, with a color e-ink screen ($ 199 retail) and a watch variant in a steel case ($ 299 retail). Apple Watch models start at $ 349, and the price of luxury watches comes to $ 17,000.
