Criminologists study crime scenes with virtual reality glasses

Scientists from the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Zurich, Switzerland, are developing technologies designed to help investigators, judges and lawyers to better visualize a crime scene and even conduct a virtual autopsy on a victim. Oculus Rift virtual reality glasses and Forensic Holodeck software recreate the scene based on three-dimensional images, surveillance cameras and witness testimony.

With the help of various equipment, the developers scan not only the scene of the crime, but also the body of the victim - if it is a question of murder. Then all the data is loaded into the application, which creates a three-dimensional scene - it can be viewed with the help of virtual reality glasses. The software allows you to reconstruct the trajectory of the bullets: a three-dimensional image is much more informative than the used two-dimensional schemes.

Other technology - Virtobot - forensic scientists can use to perform a virtual autopsy . The scanning process can be seen in this video. The 3D model includes the human body, both outside and inside. Injuries can be scanned and stored in color and scale, and then used for reconstructions of the moments of the murder or road accidents.

In a recently reviewed development case, scientists helped the prosecutor prove the gunman’s actions, as a result, the court convicted, Voice of America reports . Both systems are used in several countries around the world.
