A robotic glove and game will help patients regain control of their hands.
What is the best way to regain control of a stroke patient's hands? If you ask the University of Hertfordshire team about this, they will say that the best way is to use the SCRIPT robotic glove and a special game. The device is designed to fit the patient's hand and work together with the game created by the researchers. This game encourages users to move each finger, wrist, and hand to navigate through the maze or catch fish.
One of the researchers said:
This project focuses on methods of treating stroke patients in the home. Our goal was to make treatments available for people to practice at home using this system. Hoping patients have a vested interest in the classes. We tried this system on 30 patients and they actually practice, on average, about 100 minutes a week, and in some patients a clinical improvement in hand function was found.
The researchers worked on SCRIPT for 3 years, creating 2 prototypes and spending more than $ 5 million on the project.
