Japanese bury robobodak

Robot dogs Aibo (Artificially Intelligent Robot) went on sale in Japan and the United States in 1999. They were priced from $ 600 to $ 2000 and were not just sophisticated electronic toys. According to the Sony press release , the Aibo (or ERS-110) could not only behave like a live dog, moving all four legs, head and tail, but also express different emotions depending on the behavior of its owner. Before the end of sales of Aibo in 2006, robozobaki were sold in the amount of 150,000 units.

Aibo looked like this:

The owners of Aibo largely repeated the well-known story of Tamagotchi, which became popular in the late 90s of the last century. Since the robosobaca was in many ways superior to the primitive toy and behaved “as if it were alive”, its owners began to treat it approximately the same way they treat ordinary pets. Robots began to personalize, giving them names, look after them like puppies, walk, sew them home and festive clothes. An elderly couple without children bequeathed to cremate their robosobaku named Ai, along with that of the spouses who leave this world last. Ai was not against.

At Sony, the business of selling robosak was unprofitable, but they extended the period of their technical support until July 2014. Probably, in many specimens the joint of one of the paws turned out to be a weak point, so many Aibo began to detect a defect - the robot could neither rise from the floor nor move. Because of this, one of the former engineers of Sony, now living near Tokyo, has acquired quite a good extra income. Although he charges about $ 200 for repairing Aibo, he also often hears something like “Repair my dog for any money!”.

Those Aibo, who were left without a host, are not ignored. Recently, the ceremony of “reuniting the souls of dead robots and their masters” was held in the ancient Buddhist temple of Kofuku-Ji . 18 Aibo were buried, the ceremony was headed by the chief priest of the Bungen Oi temple. On each Aibo, a scroll is attached with the name of the owner and the place where the robot lived before its “death”.
