Kyocera introduced a smartphone with a screen that works like a solar panel

The Japanese company Kyocera specializes in unusual solutions for smartphones. The new prototype, presented at the Mobile World Congress exhibition , is able to receive energy from the sun thanks to the screen working as a solar battery.

The smartphone uses the operating time of the company Sunpartner called Wysips Crystal. This is a photovoltaic transparent screen. It provides the transparency needed for use as a screen, while absorbing solar energy and converting it into electricity.

Screen power is 5 mW / cm 2 , thickness - 0.1 mm. Such power may not be enough to fully charge a modern voracious smartphone for a light day. But to extend the work of the smartphone in places where there is a lot of sun and few power outlets, it’s quite possible. Some companies have already tried to incorporate solar panels into the lid of smartphones, but this meant that the smartphone would have to be kept in an uncomfortable position with the screen facing down for charging.

Previously unusual Kyocera smartphone projects include: a protected Kyocera Brigadier , a two-screen Kyocera Echo and a flexible device with an OLED display (not yet out of the prototype stage).
